Add your signature in Gmail

Paste an HTML signature into Gmail on desktop, set it for replies, and fix the two things Gmail does that surprise people.

Desktop

  1. Press Copy signature in the builder.
  2. Open Settings (the gear) → See all settings → General.
  3. Scroll to Signature and click Create new.
  4. Click into the box and press Ctrl + V or Cmd + V.
  5. Below the box, set the signature for new emails and for on reply/forward.
  6. Scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes. Gmail does not save until you do.

Two things Gmail does

It hides your signature behind three dots

When you reply, Gmail collapses the signature behind a small … button. That is only how it looks while you write. The recipient still receives the full signature.

It strips some styling on paste

Gmail's editor removes a few CSS properties when you paste. Everything in these designs is chosen to survive that: inline styles, table layout, no classes and no external stylesheet.

The Gmail mobile app

The Gmail app on iPhone and Android has its own plain-text signature setting that cannot hold HTML. Set the signature on desktop and leave the mobile signature empty, otherwise you get both.
